Selected recent articles are presented here with a brief description
of their subject. Below these are full lists of journal and conference
publications.
- Air
ionisation and colonisation/infection with methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter species in an
intensive care unit. Kerr, K.G.; Beggs, C.B.; Dean,
S.G.; Thornton, J.; Donnelly, J.; Todd N.J.; Sleigh, P.A.; Qureshi,
A.; Taylor, C.C. (2006) Intensive
Care Medicine, 32(2), pp.315-317.
This paper describes the outcomes of a clinical trial in
an intensive care ward in which a number of industrial
ionisers were placed. The results shown almost complete elimination
of one infection which was previously endemic
on that ward. Interestingly infections caused by other organisms
remained unchanged.
- Use
of CFD Analysis in Modifying a TB Ward in Lima , Peru . Noakes,
C.J.; Sleigh, P.A.; Escombe, A.R.; Beggs, C.B. (2006) Indoor
and Built Environment, 15(1), pp.41-47.
This paper has arisen out of a collaborative link with an Imperial College Welcome Trust project based in Lima, Peru. As part of a wider study into preventing nosocomial TB transmission, a CFD study was carried out to examine how changes in the design of a mechanically ventilated TB ward may reduce the risk of infection for patients, visitors and healthcare workers. The study demonstrated how physical partitions and changes to the ventilation system design may significantly reduce the spread of bioaersols between zones. This information was used by architects and engineers to remodel the ward and its ventilation system.
- Bioaerosol Production on a
Respiratory Ward. Roberts, K.; Hathway, E.A.;
Fletcher, L.A.; Beggs, C.B.; Elliott M.W.; Sleigh, P.A. (2006) Indoor
and Built Environment, 15(1), pp.35-40.
This reports on a preliminary hospital based study
taking measurement designed to identify the bioburden
of the air in hospital wards. It also looks at
the relationship between activities in the ward and their
effects on the level of airborne organisms.
- Acinetobacter
spp. and the Clinical Environment. Beggs, C.B.; Kerr
K.G.; Snelling A.M.; Sleigh, P.A. (2006) Indoor
and Built Environment,
15(1), pp.19-24.
The proliferance of Acineterbacter spp. in hospitals
and the significance of this is examined.
- Health
risks in wastewater irrigation: Comparing estimates from quantitative
microbial risk analyses and epidemiological studies.
Mara, D.D.; Sleigh, P.A.; Blumenthal U.J.; Carr R.M.
(2006) Journal
of Water and Health, pp.x-xx.
Monte Carlo methods are used to assess the risk to
consumers of lettuce that have been irrigated
using wastewater. Assessments are made to show the allowable
levels of contamination in wastewater such
that the risk to health is acceptable.
- Modelling
the Transmission of Airborne Infections in Enclosed
Spaces.
Noakes, C.J.; Beggs, C.B.; Sleigh, P.A.; Kerr, K.G.
(2006) Epidemiology and Infection.
This paper presents two analytical zone mixing models for evaluating the performance of upper-room ultraviolet disinfection devices. The predicted results are compared to a CFD simulation of the same room that incorporates a biological decay model of microorganisms in the presence of UV light. The study demonstrates that with the selection of appropriate mixing factors the simple models can be used with some confidence in the design of UV systems or to carry out risk assessments. However the study highlights the limitations of these models and demonstrates through CFD the complex interaction between the room airflow and UV disinfection process.
